THE NAME THEY KEEP SAYING IN THAT SENATE CHAMBER

THE NAME THEY KEEP SAYING IN THAT SENATE CHAMBER — original Morning Coffee Thoughts cover image.

The name Romanov came up during Day 3 of the Senate impeachment trial today, and I got curious enough to stop scrolling and actually look into it.

I already know who the Romanovs are. But I figured, for the sake of the MCT community, it's worth laying out the full picture of why that name is being dropped in a Philippine Senate chamber in 2026, who brought it up first, what it was supposed to mean, and what investigators have actually found since then.

WHERE IT STARTED

Before there was a trial, there was a video.

On November 23, 2024, Vice President Sara Duterte held an online press conference that has since become the single most damaging piece of evidence against her.

At one point, a pro-Duterte blogger who goes by the handle "Maharlika" asked her about a supposed plot by the Marcos administration to eliminate the Duterte family entirely, allegedly codenamed "Operation Romanov."

Sara's response wasn't a denial. She turned it around. She said she already had a hitman ready.

If she died, that person had instructions to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (BBM), First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez. She repeated, "No joke. No joke."

The question about Romanov became secondary very fast. Her answer consumed everything.

But the name stuck. And it's why we're here now.

WHAT THE ROMANOVS MEAN IN THIS CONTEXT

For those in the MCT community who need the quick context: the Romanov family was Russia's last imperial dynasty.

On July 17, 1918, Czar Nicholas II, his wife, and all five of their children were taken to a basement in Yekaterinburg and executed by Bolshevik forces.

No trials. No exile. The entire family, wiped out in one night.

In political language, invoking the Romanovs means total elimination. Not removal from power. Not exile. Everyone.

That's the reference Sara's camp used for what they claimed was being planned against the Dutertes.

No government body has ever confirmed Operation Romanov as an actual state-sanctioned plot. It came from a question by a Duterte supporter, and Sara ran with it.

THEN BASTE OPENED HIS MOUTH

This is where it gets harder to dismiss as metaphor.

On January 27, 2024, almost a year before Sara's press conference, Davao City Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte spoke at a prayer rally in Davao and delivered what he called "a simple message" for the President.

He said: "From now on, before you go to bed, think of the Romanovs. Think of Benito Mussolini and his wife. Think of what happened to you in 1986. Maybe you'll reconsider the direction that you are taking."

The target was clear. He was speaking to Marcos. Only Marcos.

Consider what each reference actually points to.

The Romanovs: an entire ruling family executed by force.

Benito Mussolini: Italy's World War II fascist dictator and his mistress were caught while trying to flee the country, executed by partisans, and their bodies were hung upside down in public in Milan.

1986: the year Ferdinand Marcos Sr. was driven out of Malacañang through People Power (the EDSA Revolution), fled the country, and died in exile in Hawaii.

Three references. Three violent or humiliating ends for leaders who overstayed. All directed at one man.

When this video resurfaced during House Justice Committee (HJC) hearings in April and May 2026, lawmakers called it "nakakabahala," deeply troubling.

Rep. Benny Abante Jr. called on the NBI (National Bureau of Investigation) to investigate not just Sara, but the entire Duterte family for a possible destabilization plot.

His reading: if Sara threatened the hitman route, and Baste was publicly cataloguing violent ends of rulers, the family wasn't speaking in hypotheticals.

WHAT RODRIGO WAS ACCUSED OF

In April 2026, Ramil Madriaga, the alleged former bagman (someone who handles unofficial funds on behalf of a political figure) of VP Sara, came forward with testimony that added another layer.

He told investigators that Rodrigo Duterte had discussed extraordinary measures to remove Marcos if political pressure failed, including the assassination option as a possible last resort.

Madriaga's credibility is contested. He's in detention, he's cooperating with the state, and his claims carry the usual caveats.

But the NBI took his statements seriously enough to continue building leads from them.

One detail that barely got coverage: after Madriaga began cooperating, the NBI confirmed Sara visited him in jail twice.

Around the same period, he reportedly received death threats while incarcerated.

WHAT THE NBI ACTUALLY FOUND

The NBI did not treat Sara's November 2024 statements as political theater.

NBI Senior Agent John Mark Calilung, the prosecution's first witness at the Senate impeachment court, was the agent-on-case for the video authentication investigation.

He confirmed the November 23, 2024 video is authentic.

The NBI ran hash value computations, a digital verification process that checks whether a file has been altered, coordinated with Meta to preserve the original URL, and found no evidence the footage was edited, spliced, or AI-generated.

Calilung also told Senator-judge Raffy Tulfo that AI-generated videos typically run only a few seconds.

Sara's press conference ran over two hours.

Beyond the video, NBI Director Melvin Matibag told the House Justice Committee that suspects had already been identified, including individuals within the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines), who may have been hired as the alleged assassins.

He did not name them because the investigation was ongoing.

NBI Regional Director Jeremy Lontoc went further, confirming to the House panel that there was a real person connected to Sara's statements as the alleged hitman.

The NBI filed criminal cases before the DOJ (Department of Justice): one count of inciting to sedition and multiple counts of grave threats. The DOJ resolution was still being processed as of late April 2026.

WHAT HAPPENED ON DAY 3

Today, Sara's defense team, led by Atty. Carlo Joaquin Narvasa, spent the session cross-examining Calilung.

The defense took two angles.

First, they questioned Calilung's qualifications, presenting documents about MaxCor Inter-Ventures Co., the company that provided his two-week digital forensics training.

The implication: was his authentication testimony credible?

Second, they pointed out procedural gaps in the NBI's affidavit of investigation.

Calilung confirmed the NBI's first affidavit, submitted to the DOJ in January 2025, was returned with seven deficiencies, including the absence of an affidavit from the person who originally recorded the November 23 video.

A revised affidavit was submitted in February 2025.

Narvasa pressed on why journalist affidavits referenced in the investigation were not attached to the revised document and asked Calilung directly: "Did you really investigate this case?"

The prosecution responded that a separate witness will still testify on the actual alleged hitman. That testimony hasn't happened yet.

Senator-judge Risa Hontiveros asked the defense whether it was their position that grave threats are acceptable if there is a "legitimate reason."

The defense said that was not the point.

Presiding officer Sen. Chiz Escudero reminded both sides to focus on evidence, not conclusions.

THE HARDER QUESTION

Sara's camp has always framed her November 2024 statements as conditional.

If I die first, someone dies. The argument is that a conditional threat is not an actual threat.

The DOJ prosecutor who reviewed the case disagreed.

The position was stated plainly: a threat delivered with intent does not stop being a threat because it comes attached to a condition.

The Senate is now working through 92 trial days covering all four articles of impeachment: misuse of P612.5 million in confidential funds, unexplained wealth, constitutional violations, and the assassination plot.

What makes Article IV stand out from the rest is not just the video.

The prosecution is trying to establish a pattern: Baste warns Marcos about the Romanovs in January 2024. Sara threatens Marcos directly in November 2024. Rodrigo allegedly discussed removal options behind closed doors.

And throughout all of it, a real person with a real identity was allegedly being paid to carry something out.

The NBI called the video authentic. Hitman suspects were identified.

The DOJ received charges. A cross-examination today didn't erase that.

The Romanovs fell when no one in power was willing to stop what was coming.

The Senate is now sitting in judgment of whether someone in Philippine power was planning to make that reference literal.
